A hunter in Utah may be reconsidering who his best friend is after his dog stepped on a shotgun and shot him in the buttocks.

Authorities in Box Elder County said the 46-year-old man and a buddy were duck hunting on a boat at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge when the he placed the shotgun on the bow, stepped into the water to move some decoys and was shot by the excited canine, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

According to the publication, the man was hit with 27 pellets of birdshot from the 12-gauge shotgun fired from a distance of about 10 feet.

The man was treated at an area hospital and released. The dog was unharmed.

It's unclear if the hunters were able to take home any waterfowl, or if the dog was the top shot of the day.
